I have a couple of Subway stories of my own to share:

Some years ago, I was on my way to work at my previous place of employment when the train stopped at 23rd Street. Three people got on, 1 guy, 2 girls, and they were talking in sign.

Shortly thereafter, the train stopped at Union Square, and a couple got on, and they were in the middle of a heated argument, also being played out in sign.

The kicker? The first 3 people noticed the the other two and sat there eavesdropping for the rest of the way.

The other story is as follows:

I was on the N train, heading downtown. Now the N train has those seats that face toward the front of the car, toward the back, and then seats by the doors that face each other. I was sitting on a seat that faced the front.

Among the people that got on at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue, a woman got on and sat opposite me, and facing the rear. She also placed a New York Post on the seat next to her. A man also got on and chose a seat facing the opposite side, and was in front of me.

When he saw the paper on the seat, he assumed that it did not belong to anyone and went to claim it. The young woman stopped his pilferage and he seemed to stammer out an apology.

In an attempt to feel less embarrassed, he felt it necessary to share what he was feeling with the nearest male member of the species, me.

Not being able to hear him through my headphones, and not really caring about his situation, I responded to him by saying, "Why are you talking to me?" in a rather loud voice.

This caused him further embarrassment and it was enough to make him get off at the next station.

I loved Saints and Sinners! That could be a great beginning for an interesting story or book! It caught and held my attention right to the end. Since I live in the Midwest the only place I get to experience in a small part of what you describe is if we head to Chicago and ride the many forms of mass transit there (Which we do when we can.). Thanks for your vivid pictures of life on the subway.

My mother tells a subway story from the 50's:

She and a few friends from Music and Art HS were engrossed in looking at pictures in a large heavy art book. Suddenly an exhibitionist placed his male member on the page. The girl holding the book exclaimed, "Oh!" and slammed the book closed. Ouch!
